Adorn the Doctrine of God

Titus 2:9-10  “Exhort bondservants to be obedient to their own masters, to be well pleasing in all things, not answering back, not pilfering, but showing all good fidelity, that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things.”

The points the Apostle is making in this context are equally valid for those of us who are servants of the Lord today. “Pilfering” relates to thievery, as in stealing from you employer or work place.. “Good fidelity” refers to honesty in all applications. They both refer to an employee who can be trusted. “Adorn” not only refers to dressing like a Christian, but also to looking and acting like a Christian in all our circumstances, at work, when shopping, attending community activities, as well as at home before family members. There is no place for displaying ourselves as non-Christian. Our conversation, our conduct, our disposition and attitudes demonstrate whether or not we are consciously living as a believer and that Christ is our Lord.

Working people spend a great percentage of time at their jobs. Their most important mission field may be their fellow workers and/or customers. Christian workers approach each day as an undeserved opportunity to share Christ with others through their words and actions. One “slip” can ruin a reputation built up over many weeks and months. Unbelievers will remember that one “slip” much longer that we will. Unbelievers think Christians are to live perfect lives, but we don’t believe that. That is why, of course, most people do not have confidence in our beliefs, and religion. They see us as self-righteous hypocrites.

That “no one is perfect” has become our excuse for our “slips” as believers. The world believes that a believer is either a Christian or they are not. They expect our faith to literally control how we live. I believe Jesus does too. You can’t be sometimes a Christian and sometimes not. You are either a true Christian or you are a disobedient one, committing sin.

If we are going to be an effective witnesses for Christ, we must not be lazy! We must not be complainers. We must not do substandard work. We must not put in minimal effort. We are to be true witnesses for Christ. We represent Christ! We must honor Him with our labor, and conduct in all secular opportunities.
