All sin is against God

“Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” 1 Corinthians 10:12-13

“For I acknowledge my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Against You, You only, have I sinned, and done this evil in Your sight–That You may be found just when You speak, and blameless when you judge.” Psalm 51:3-4

“How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God? Genesis 39:9

Joseph knew that when we sin, we sin against God. He knew that all sin is primarily against God. Not only would he be sinning against her husband, but would be deliberately sinning against God. “All unrighteousness is sin” (1 John 5:17), and “sin is transgression of the law of God” (1 John 3:4). Sin is an act of disobedience to the Law of God. It is any act, which includes thoughts as well as deeds, done in conscious and deliberate violation of God’s will as expressed in God’s Word. It is rebellion.

The Bible says “Flee idolatry” (1 Cor. 10:14) and “Flee youthful lusts” (2 Timothy 2:22). Both of these will lead one away from the worship of Holy God, and will destroy one’s own soul. In fact the Bible declare’s that sexual immorality of any kind is also a sin against one’s own body as well as a sin against God (1 Cor. 6:18)..Therefore we should never take sin of any kind lightly. Holy God is watching. Every sin is before Him. It is like shaking our fist in His face.

Man’s easy answer is that “God will not allow us to be tempted beyond what you are able to bear, so I do not need to be too careful. However that is a very dangerous opinion, for it is only half of what God says. Look at the verse again (!Cor. 10:13). God does not limit the power of the temptation, but instead promises a way of escape. We survive the temptation only by trusting God and looking for the way of escape which God provides us. It is still an act of the will. It is still spiritual discipline. The way of escape is God’s way for us to Flee! Flee idolatry, and Flee youthful lusts, etc.. If you wait and ponder the sin, or carry it with you in your fantasy thoughts you will lose. The “way of escape” is the route to “Flee”. Joseph knew and fled, from her, from her house, and the temptation.
