The Unsearchable Riches of Christ

Ephesians 3:8

“To me, who am less than the least of all the saints, this grace was given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ”. (NKJV)

Eternity is not long enough for us to fully grasp all there is to know about Christ. For Christ is limitless in His wisdom, power, and love. In fact, all spiritual knowledge, including the “unsearchable riches of Christ,” remain a mystery unless God, through the Holy Spirit, reveals the truth to us.

The mystery of Christ does not mean that He hides Himself from people, but that people who are dead in trespasses and sin cannot see, hear, or understand Him. All unsaved people are dead in sin and cannot know God unless He opens their eyes to spiritual realities (John 14:26)..

Paul, who descried himself as “chief” among sinners (1 Timothy 1:15) and “less than the least of all the saints” (Eph, 3:8) knew what it meant to be dead in trespasses and sin (Eph. 2:1), and then redeemed by the grace of God in Christ Jesus. He was spiritually blinded (2 Cor. 4:4), even though he had studied theology most of his life. He was among the most educated in the Jewish faith, yet totally ignorant of the “unsearchable riches of Christ.” He now wanted all the Gentiles to know Christ as he was learning and experiencing Him in his own spiritual life.

We often respond concerning those who are unsaved and do not attend church with, “They know they ought to attend church,” and “They know they ought to read the Bible.” I also hear that “They know they need to become a Christian,” because they know they are going to Hell if they don’t become saved.” The problem is that they know none of these things (1 Cor. 2:14). They are mysteries to them.

Yes, they know that we believe all those things. But why? What does it have to do with them? So we got religion and believe all this, but they don’t want religion. They believe they can order their own lives and decide what is best for them without the burden of religion. All their friends encourage, “Its your life, live the way you want to.”

They dismiss guilt by claiming it is not a sin. They dismiss Scripture as religion of the past and for another people. They believe freedom is the right to do what ever they please. And believe that being right with God, if there is a God, is being good as present day culture defines it. If present day culture says it is right and good, then it is good, no matter what religion says about it. The Bible is not the “final authority” for them as we claim it is. One of the reasons is, we don’t live by Scripture as though it is the final authority for us. So if we can ignore, or even disobey the Bible, then what do they have to fear. It works for some, for others it don’t.

This is why judgment must begin at the church.(1 Peter 4:17).
